RIVERS RUN RED AND SKY NEWS (NEWS INTERNATIONAL) ANNOUNCE CONTENT DEAL FOR NEWS CONTENT FOR THE IMMERSIVE WORKSPACES SOLUTION
Two years ago Sky News launched its newsroom island in Second Life.
We were the only 24 hour rolling news channel with a presence in the
virtual world. We launched with an amazing simulcast of Adam Boulton’s
Sunday programme at the Hay festival.
Since then we have held
other good events in Second Life. Martin Stanford interviewed James
May, Martin Brunt answered questions about his life as a crime
correspondent.
But life, even Second Life, and technology, move
on. In Second Life, increasingly, the trend has moved away from
corporate islands like the Sky Newsroom.
Instead, we are moving
to a new “Immersive Workspaces” platform in Second Life where employees
meet to exchange ideas and do business. Sky News will be providing
regular updated news feeds of top stories direct to these workspaces –
keeping everyone up to date.
Sky News is primarily a breaking
news organisation –- indeed the best breaking news provider in the
business. We strive to bring it to you first – wherever you are.
So
we have decided to close down our Second Life island and instead make
available our news to our friends inside the Immersive Workspaces of
Second Life. We think this makes much more sense for our brand. Here's
a video where you can see what a Sky News pod will be like.

THE IMMERSIVE WORKSPACES SOLUTION SHIPS TO SEVEN ALPHA TESTERS FOR THE UPCOMING BEHIND THE FIREWALL SOLUTION
Last October, Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Lab/Second Life
(affectionately known as “M”), briefly hinted that we were working on
this at the Virtual Worlds London Conference.
At that time, we were just beginning to build an Enterprise team and
formulate our plan. Since then, we’ve been hard at work to make a
stand-alone, behind the firewall version of Second Life a reality.
Today,
we’re pleased to share that the stand-alone version of Second Life
solution is currently in the alpha phase. We have nine alpha
installations in the field at organizations such as IBM, Naval Undersea
Warfare Center (NUWC), New Media Consortium (NMC), Intel, and Northrop
Grumman. And, we’re planning to go into a limited closed beta phase
this summer with general availability later this year.
Yes, this
is a server solution that is completely disconnected from the main
Second Life environment with all of the rich functionality in the box.
